Thought of the week #6

Another Monday is here and another week to start fresh forget any negativity from the week before and get out of bed with a positive, determined head space. Make this week the week you complete some goals, tick of some annoying to do's that have been hanging around on your list for a while, and go to bed with a satisfied feeling that you've completed what you wanted to do.

Currently February 16

Welcome back to another installment of what I seem to be calling 'currently' which is a bit of a strange title but, I'm going with it now. This month has been oddly hectic but it's been a good month and it finally is beginning to look like Spring might be just around the corner - which is my favourite season of the year.

So here it is, February.

Watching&Listening

Chewing Sand aka Hazel Hayes
I do enjoy a bit of YouTube and love it as a social media platform and I do have my favorites. Whilst I was away I missed a fair few videos that I wished I could have watched from some of my favourite YouTubers, due to lack of WiFi in the land of Aus. One of those was Hazel Hayes 'Time of the Month' series that she posted on her channel Chewing Sand every month of the year last year.

Eating&Drinking

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. I love breakfast and I've figured out breakfasts that fill me up to keep me going until lunch but don't make me feel all rubbish and sluggish. At the moment I've been enjoying porridge topped with some of my favourite Whole Earth crunchy peanut butter, honey and banana. It's super yummy and keeps me going through the morning without feeling like I need a snack. On the weekend, I tend to have a bigger breakfast later on in the morning so I like to whizz up my 'All the Berries' smoothie often with frozen berries which makes it thicker and more like a frozen yoghurt which is DELICIOUS.

Reading

Buy it here

This is the first book I've read for TBR 20 challenge and my first star from my TBR jar. So far I've been really enjoying it and enjoying trying a Bill Bryson that's new to me. I'll put a review up when I've finished it, off course, but for now I'm enjoying it a lot.

So, what have you been loving this month? Let me know in the comments below. I hope you had a good month, and here's to an even better one.

Until next time,

Our Endless Numbered Days | Review

Our Endless Numbered Days Book Review

In recent months I had heard a lot of good things about this book. It had appeared in a lot of my favourite BookTuber's hauls and also seemed to be sticking in the top seller list. So when I saw it in Sainsbury's during my weekly grocery shop for £3.99 I could hardly walk past it.

It's always a concern, that with a book like this, that has been doing the BookTube rounds and hanging around in the best seller list, that maybe it's a case of over-hype. However, in this case it definitely wasn't over hype. 'Our Endless Numbered Day's is a beautifully written, enchanting book that is hard to put down and hard to believe it's over - not because there are unanswered questions but because you don't want it to be over.

We first meet our main character, Penny, 1985 when she has returned to London from Die Huitte where she has been living with her father for 9 years. However, the story really starts in 1976 when her father takes her away from her comfortable home in London out to the middle of no where, Europe, to live in Die Huitte, where he tells her that the rest of the world, including her  beloved mother Ute, is dead.

The story goes back and forth between Penny's time Die Huitte with her father and returning to London with her Mother. The twist and excitement isn't in the fact that she does indeed return home, of course because this would mean the excitement is over, but in how and why she gets to return home and her learning to deal with the fact that her father is a liar and why he decided to take her away.

Claire Fuller's writing is beautiful. It's so descriptive that everything is so vivid and easy to picture. The forest and the mountains and Die Huitte are all described within an inch of their life, which, if you don't like pages and pages of description, you won't like. It may sound boring but Fuller's writing makes it engaging and easy to read and not once did I feel like I was going to nod off.

Her characters are also beautifully written and described. Each is it's own and they are well rounded and I had very few questions about each character and what their role was within the story and what they added. The twists and the plot go in an unexpected direction towards the end and suddenly everything you've read before you realise has added up to this and suddenly you realise all the way through Fuller has been dropping little hints without shoving it in your face.

The slightly annoying part is the big reveal of the major plot twist, two pages before the end. It's very soap-opera esque and takes away a bit from all the beautiful, well crafted prose that went before it. Obviously the book is still wonderful and one little flaw is not going to make it an awful book but it is something that was a little annoying.

This book wouldn't be for everyone. For me I wanted to carry on reading to confirm suspicions and follow Penny's story to the end, it wasn't easy to put it down especially during the last 1/4 of the book. However, for some people the middle section, that is mainly set in the forest and is very heavy on description with little plot movement, would be dull and boring and hard to get through. All though I love this kind of story telling I can see that others wouldn't.

As well as this, although the plot reveal is a shocker it's also unexplored after that. For me the actual reveal was confirmation of what I already suspected, however the implications of that were never explored. Which for me was fine, but for others may be irritating. As well as this some may find the plot twist, as well as other themes and points of narrative disturbing, which may put some off the book.

Overall, for me the book was brilliantly crafted and a great read to kick of my reading year.

Have you read 'Our Endless Numbered Days' what did you think? If you haven't read it go pick it up and let me know what you think.

Until next time,

Thought of the week #6

We always look at the negatives of a situation first, or at least I do, and most people I know do. Whenever we're doing something new or trying something different or stepping away from our comfort zone a little bit we always think about what could go wrong in that situation and become scared and anxious about. Instead of doing that why not think about what could go right and all the positives that come from it. What you'll gain from the situation if it turns out the best way it could.

Until next time,

My favourite cleansers for all budgets

Cheap cleansers

This New Year I've been super vigilant with my skincare. I made a resolution, but more of a promise to myself, that I would really stick to a good skin care routine that worked for my skin and my level of patience. Which is limited.

For me skin care needs to be easy without too much faffing as I do my skincare mainly early in the morning and before I go to bed at night. I also don't like using anything that is too strongly scented or or feel to heavy on my skin.

At the age of 22 I feel I'm at an age where I should have my skincare down and for a few years it's been a bit hit and miss. I've had periods where I've used skin care that's made me break out, suffer with dry skin, all sorts. However recently I've been really selective when finding skincare and sticking to what works rather mixing and matching around too much.

On that note here are a few cleansers that work for any budget and I think are great.

I love this cleanser. I really feels like your face is super clean after you've used it. The bottle advises 1-2 pumps but I find I really only need one unless I'm wearing A LOT of make up which doesn't happen very often. You just massage the product into your face and leave for a few seconds, then just wash it off with a muslin cloth of flannel. Make sure you rinse your cloth regularly whilst doing this though.

This cleanser is so gorgeous. It' super moisturising and makes your skin feel great as well as looking very glowy and healthy. You use it similar to the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish, massage into your face and remove with a warm cloth. I like to do this twice with this cleanser because it feels like it's doing wonders for my skin.

This is very similar to the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish. The formula is very similar, the scent is very similar, the way use it is virtually identical and the way it leaves you skin feeling is very similar. The only thing that's different is this product is in a tube and the Liz Earle is a pump - and this one is better for the bank account.

I really love the Botanics range by boots. it's all natural producs and everything I've used has never had adverse effects on my skin and always feels really nice and calming. (I also like their hot cloth cleansing balm but I didn't feel I could really include another hot cloth cleanser without this becoming 'my favourite hot cloth cleansers for all budgets'). This one is lovely and silky and does a really good job of removing make up. It doesn't irritate your skin and is really calming and feels very soothing. With this you just apply it all over your neck and face and wipe away with a cotton pad. Very easy.

All these cleaners are really lovely and gentle and most of them say you can use it on your eyes to remove eye makeup but I wouldn't. Your eyes and the skin around them are so delicate so I would always use an eye make up remover for my eyes and use these sort of cleansers for my skin only.

Let me know if you try any of these, or have tried any of these products and let me know what you think.

Until next time,

5 smoothie recipes to help put some bounce in your day

Smoothie recipes

I love a good smoothie. Sometimes you just can't beat chucking a heap of fruit and veggies into a blender to be rewarded with a marvelous taste sensation.

I normally have a smoothie at breakfast time (as or with breakfast - depending on how hungry I'm feeling) or as a morning snack. Too much fruit in the afternoon is not a good idea, all that good sugar will have you buzzing through the night. Try to keep smoothies or juices to a morning time treat.

I've been mixing up different fruit varieties for a while and have got 5 smoothie for you today that I think you'll enjoy.

Breakfast Smoothie

1 banana
1tbsp crunchy peanut butter
1tbsp honey
50g oats
250ml milk of your choice

Put everything in a blender and blitz until smooth. (Easy this smoothie lark ey?)

All The Berries Smoothie

50g strawberries
50g blueberries
50g raspberries
1/2 frozen banana
50g natural yoghurt
50ml water

Put everything in a blender and blitz until smooth.

Green Machine Smoothie

1 apple cored and peeled
1 pear cored and peeled
25g cucumber
50g spinach
50g natural yoghurt
50ml water
Juice of 1/2 a lime

Put the apple, pear and cucumber into the blender with the water and blitz until smooth.
Add the spinach, yoghurt and lime and repeat.

Tip. With ingredients that need to be juicier i.e. apple, orange etc. add them to the blender first with water.

Tropical Twist Smoothie

1/4 pineapple cubed
1/2 mango
1 peach (stoned)
50ml coconut water
50g coconut yoghurt

Put everything in a blender and blitz until smooth.

Detox Smoothie

1/4 pineapple cubed
1 tsp of ginger
50g blueberries
50g kale
50ml water
50g greek yoghurt

Put everything in a blender and blitz until smooth.

These recipes are so simple and easy and all packed full of good fruit and veggies meaning you will get some of your 5 a day in without having to think about it too much. Unlike juices, smoothies don't take out all the good fibrous stuff so these recipes are bound to keep you going through the morning.

Let me know if you try any of these out yourself or if you've got any of your own smoothie recipes that you live by to get you through the morning.

Indoor Valentine's Dates

With the weather set to be miserable and typically English on Valentine's Day any plans for a romantic stroll, outing or anything like that I'm sure will have gone out of the window. Although there is plenty to do indoors away from the home it's sometimes quite nice just to curl up in doors in something comfy well the weather goes for it outside. Bearing that in mind I thought I'd give you some ideas for good ways to spend Valentine's Day in your own home.

Indoor Picnic

Spread out a sheet on the floor and indulge in some, well, indulgent foods. Salmon sandwiches, cheese and biscuits, fancy chocolates. This isn't a beach side picnic with the whole family. This is an indoor picnic on Valentine's day so go for it with the foodie treats.

Cook 3 Meals
No I don't mean a three course meal I mean all three meals of the day. One cooks breakfast, other cooks lunch and you both cook dinner. Some ideas would be smoked salmon and poached eggs on an English Muffin for breakfast, mushroom risotto for lunch and rump steak with rosemary and sea salt roasted potatoes for dinner.

At home spa day

Pamper each other with a warm bath, massages, time to relax, all enjoyed with a glass of bubbly. Just think of recreating that spa day experience but in the comfort of your home with your own slippers and own dressing gown.

At home cinema

Go and buy yourself a new release that you wish you'd seen at the cinema. A massive bottle of fizzy, some homemade popcorn and dim the lights. Apart from the fact it will be much cozier due to being sat on your own sofa with as many blankets as you fancy it will also be half the price.

I hope you all have a lovely Valentine's Day, let me know if you decide to stay in and opt for one of these indoor dates.

Until next time,

The best of bullet journal inspiration

I first heard about bullet journaling from my lovely friend Georgie, over at BecomingGeorgie, at the beginning of January. Since then I've become addicted. A spare five minutes at my desk are often filled with scouring Pinterest for new bullet journal ideas and page layouts. If your someone who loves organisation, lists and coloured pens this is the thing for you. And even if your not this is a great way to get more organised as it's so easy to mould the bullet journal to what you want it to be and your life.

For starters Marie Clare have got a great article about Bullet Journaling. It includes everything you need to know to get you started and isn't as intimidating as some other sites. The journal used in the article isn't the best example of a Bullet Journal but it's a good start for getting your head round the system.

In the most basic of terms the bullet journal is broken down into yearly, monthly, weekly and daily planning. You then index all your sections and everything has a key to keep things simple and easy to use. My suggestion would be to start simple with the basic Bullet Journal layout and then create and add more once you get used to it.

The greatest thing about a bullet journal is that you can mould it to what you need it to be for the lifestyle you lead. Lily Pebbles added pages to hers so she could track her blog posts and YouTube videos. Other ideas are a list of books you want to read, have read or want to buy, a finance tracker or a meal planning page. The options are limitless.

One blog I absolutely adore for Bullet Journal inspo is Boho Berry. Not only does she have good ideas for how to make the pages look amazing but she also tackles common problems of Bullet Journaling, such as future planning.

If you're completely convinced that this system is for you and aren't sure how to set up to make it look lovely but functional Tiny Ray of Sunshine is the place to go. She's been using the system for a while and has found a set up that truly works for her but also has great tips and suggestions for how to make the system perfect for you.

For me this system is perfect. I have my FiloFax to keep track of events and appointments but I never wanted to fill it up with stuff for work so this is the perfect way for me to keep them separate but also to have a clear overview of everything that's going on and needs doing.

Let me know if you try out the Bullet Journal system and for more inspo check out my Pinterest board.

The TBR Jar

I reached the last page of 'Our Endless Numbered Days', it took me a moment to register it all. I don't like rushing away from the end of a book and I don't like rushing straight into another. I like to sit and think about it, mull over it, gather some thoughts about it, probably wait until at least the next day to pick up the next one.

However, I finished this one and, on no account of how good or bad the book was, I couldn't wait to pick my first star out of my TBR jar.

I made my TBR jar right at the beginning of January after deciding to have a go a TBR 20. A challenge to read 20 books you already own before buying anymore. The first star equals the first book of my TBR challenge, so, so far I'm doing well.

The next book I'll be reading is Bill Bryson's 'Notes from a Big Country.' The only book I've read of his before is Mother Tongue which I read for my English Language A Level. I've heard a lot about his travel writing though and have been meaning to dip my toe in the water for a while , so this was a good way to push myself into it.

'Our Endless Numbered Days' was my first book of the year and I really enjoyed it, but a review will be up shortly so you can read all y thoughts then.

15 motivational quotes from Pinterest that will give you a kick up the arse - Cosmopolitan.co.uk:

Do I need to say anything else? If you want something you've got to go out and get it. The best way to get something done is to start working towards it. Whatever goal it is you've got whether in your work life or personal life, start by making steps towards it and eventually, before you know it you'll be there.

Currently | January 16

First week into February and I'm going to take my Friday post this week to look back on my current loves from January. January was a good month, starting a new job, finally getting all our belongings arrive from Australia and generally a good start to the year. January saw a few new things enter into my favourite things - a new newsletter, a TV show re-visit and some good recipes.

Watching&Listening
Charlotte Ritchie as Nurse Barbara Gilbert, Helen George as Nurse Trixie Franklin and Emerald Fennell as Nurse Patsy Mount | Call the Midwife S5 E1:

Yep, Call the Midwife. I'm a massive fan and for two years I've been out of the loop. I haven't caught up on what I've missed yet but I couldn't not delve back in when the new series started a couple of weeks ago. Who else just watches as wishes they could be as glam as Trixie and be living in 1960's East End and be a midwife? Every weekend I watch it and think I'm going to have a career path change. Well I'll just live vicariously through my Sunday night obsession.

Reading
Deliciously Ella

You've probably heard of the goddess that is Deliciously Ella aka Ella Woodward after every blogger under the sun is raving about her cookbook which I can't wait to get my hands on. However I've signed up to her newsletter from her website and I love it. The recipes you get are so good, absolutely delicious but also super healthy and nutritious. My favorite so far is the banana and peanut butter smoothie. Yum!

Eating&Drinking

I acquired a magic bullet blender over the Christmas period so as you can imagine I've been rustling up a few smoothies in that which has been great for my healthy eating campaign. I'll tell one thing for sure having a simple, easy to clean blender makes smoothie making and consuming a lot earlier and a lot more likely. But a recipe of mine I've been loving is my simple greens and red pesto pasta which I've been having for lunch a lot. I make a bulk lot of this at the beginning of the week and see's me through easily and is super filling so great for lunch on busy days. It's also full of goodness - fibre, iron, calcium all good stuff. So here it is:

Ingredients
500g wholewheat pasta
190g red pesto
1 broccoli
100g kale
8 spring onions

Method
Bring a liter of water to the boil.
Add the 500g of pasta and cook for 15-20 minutes.
While the pasta is cooking chop the spring onions and broccoli.
Once the pasta is cooked drain it and put it in a bowl.
Put the broccoli in the pan and cover with water, bring to the boil and cook for about 10 minutes or until soft.
Whilst the broccoli is cooking add the kale and spring onions to the bowl with the pasta.
Stir it all together so the kale softens.
Once the broccoli is cooked drain the water away and bash it around in the pan to break it up a bit.
Stir the broccoli in with the pasta before adding the pesto and stirring that through the ingredients as well.

And there we have it a super simple recipe to see you through the week to save you getting up early to make a lunch or spending your hard earned money on a not so nutritious sandwich.

What have you been loving this past month? Let me know in the comments.

Until next time,

TBR20

TBR list paper stars

This blog has always had quite a heavy feature of books. I love reading and always have, however, with having been travelling for two years reading feel on the back burner a bit and although I read a few books I didn't read as many as I wanted to. It also means I've got a lot of books on my shelves and kindle that have gone un-read for a long period of time.

This year I'm trying something, a bit of a project. And we all know how much I love a project.

It's called TBR 20 and to make it even more of a project I made some paper stars too.

So what's the concept? Read 20 books you already own before purchasing, coming into the possession of, borrowing any more books. So basically no new books until you've read what you've got.

Sounds simple and it is simple. The idea is that you motivate yourself by knowing you can buy a book after you've put down number 20 so you race through all 20 books to get to the book shop ASAP. The difficult part is having the will power not to pick up a book on your lunch break because you left the book you've been reading at home.

I decided to make it even more of a project and a bit more fun that will possibly help me see the project through. If you fancy making some paper stars for this project or another one check out The Readables tutorial. They're really easy and good fun.

So why not try TBR 20 yourself and let me know how it goes?

Until next time,

Hello February

I like February. February is a good month. You're back in routine, resolutions are well underway and there's that little hint of sunshine popping it's head around the curtain of cloud.

January was a relatively good month for me aside from the odd hiccup here and there the month was successful. Hopefully February will be the same.

I haven't made any resolutions so far this year and I don't think I want to. Last year was such a good year and so far this one has been pretty good to. I think I'm just going to carry on as I have been and go with the flow.

There is a couple of things I really want to do this month though. I really want to get on with putting some of our photos from Australia into a physical album. I really don't want our Australia photos to be one of those cases where they sit on a memory stick and never get looked at.

I also want to try and plan our first adventure of the year. Find somewhere to trek off to and explore. The tent has now arrived back in the UK so we're ready to take our Aussie adventure experiences and mold them for the cold.

So here's to February, it's going to be a good one.

Until next time,
